Finding Affordable Coverage

There are many programs that can help you get affordable health insurance. Health insurance will help pay your medical expenses here and elsewhere, and protect you from crippling debt in an emergency. We encourage all of our patients to get coverage and to seek help if you have any trouble getting enrolled.

Coverage options have changed a lot in the last few years and are continuing to change. If you have tried in the past and been discouraged, we hope you will try again with our help.

Our Navigator Beth Dyson is available to help anyone in the community with health insurance issues. Call 447-8900 to set up an appointment with her.

Children

Most children in Carroll County will qualify for children's Medicaid, including most children in middle-class families. Many Maine children will qualify as well. To enroll your child in New Hampshire Medicaid, visit nheasy.nh.gov. To enroll your child in Maine Medicaid, visit www.maine.gov/dhhs/oms/member/index.shtml. For more information on the program and for support through the application process you can make an appointment with our social worker, Sarah Wright, by calling our front desk at 447-8900.

Adults

Because of the Affordable Care Act (ACA, also known as ObamaCare), most of our patients are now able to either find affordable health insurance or qualify for Medicaid (also known as the New Hampshire Health Protection Program or NHHPP).

You can explore these programs on your own and enroll by visiting HealthCare.gov (health insurance), nheasy.nh.gov (New Hampshire Medicaid), or www.maine.gov/dhhs/oms/member/index.shtml. To see a quick estimate of which program you and your family may qualify for and what your insurance options might be, visit www.healthcare.gov/see-plans/.

You can enroll in Medicaid any time of the year, but you can only enroll in health insurance during "open enrollment" or when you qualify for a "special enrollment period." To find out if you qualify for a special enrollment period, you can visit www.healthcare.gov/screener/ or call 1-800-318-2596 (TTY: 1-855-889-4325).

HealthCare.gov is also a good resource for getting questions answered. Click here for a quick overview of the program, and here for a guide to using health insurance once you have it. Covering New Hampshire is our state's official guide to the new programs, and their website has some common questions and answers. We also like the YouToons, animated videos created by the Kaiser Family Foundation that give fun and accurate overviews of the Affordable Care Act.

Disabled adult patients can get help accessing health coverage from our social workers. Call our front desk at 447-8900 for an appointment. We also highly recommend ServiceLink Aging and Disability Resource Center. ServiceLink has an office in Tamworth at the Tri-County CAP building and is there to help people with disabilities access the resources they need. Call them at (603) 323-2043.

Seniors

We are not able to assist with Medicare applications for seniors, but we highly recommend ServiceLink Aging and Disability Resource Center. ServiceLink has an office in Tamworth at the Tri-County CAP building and can assist seniors one-on-one with Medicare. Call them at (603) 323-2043.

Get help from our Navigator

These programs can be complicated to navigate, and many of our patients have found it useful to have a helping hand. The ACA has made it possible for us to provide a Navigator, who is available to meet with New Hampshire residents one-on-one free of charge.

Our Navigator can help you...

  • Explore your options for affordable health coverage
  • Enroll in health insurance or Medicaid
  • Troubleshoot enrollment issues, including filing appeals
  • Understand how your health insurance will affect your medical costs

...and much more.

To make an appointment with a Navigator, call our front desk at 447-8900. You can also email or call our Navigator for help with quick questions, or find her at one of the many community events she attends. Navigator Beth Dyson can be reached at edyson@whitemountainhealth.org or 447-8900 x323.

Maine residents can find the same sort of help at Memorial Hospital (447-356-5461) or Sacopee Valley Health Center (Ann Marie Day, (207) 625-2210). You can also use localhelp.healthcare.gov to find an assister close to you.

Community events

Navigator Beth Dyson holds regular outreach events around Carroll County. At all of these events, you can learn more about health coverage, from what the options are to how to understand insurance, and get questions answered. You can make an appointment, or just drop in. She may add extra events in response to demand, so please call her if you need help but can't make it to any of these:
