Finding Affordable Coverage
There are many programs that can help you get affordable health insurance. Health insurance will help pay your medical expenses here and elsewhere, and protect you from crippling debt in an emergency. We encourage all of our patients to get coverage and to seek help if you have any trouble getting enrolled.
Coverage options have changed a lot in the last few years and are continuing to change. If you have tried in the past and been discouraged, we hope you will try again with our help.
Our Navigator Jenn Mashiak is available to help anyone in the community with health insurance issues. Call 447-8900 to set up an appointment with her.
You can explore these programs on your own and enroll by visiting HealthCare.gov (health insurance), nheasy.nh.gov (New Hampshire Medicaid), or www.maine.gov/dhhs/oms/member/index.shtml. To see a quick estimate of which program you and your family may qualify for and what your insurance options might be, visit www.healthcare.gov/see-plans/.
You can enroll in Medicaid any time of the year, but you can only enroll in health insurance during "open enrollment" or when you qualify for a "special enrollment period." Open enrollment for coverage in 2017 will run from November 1, 2016 through January 31, 2017. To find out if you qualify for a special enrollment period, you can visit www.healthcare.gov/screener/ or call 1-800-318-2596 (TTY: 1-855-889-4325).
HealthCare.gov is also a good resource for getting questions answered. Click here for a quick overview of the program, and here for a guide to using health insurance once you have it. Covering New Hampshire is our state's official guide to the new programs, and their website has some common questions and answers. We also like the YouToons, animated videos created by the Kaiser Family Foundation that give fun and accurate overviews of the Affordable Care Act.
Disabled adult patients can get help accessing health coverage from our social workers. Call our front desk at 447-8900 for an appointment. We also highly recommend ServiceLink Aging and Disability Resource Center. ServiceLink has an office in Tamworth at the Tri-County CAP building and is there to help people with disabilities access the resources they need. Call them at (603) 323-2043.
